3:34 am - Statistics Fail
|
Driving to the grocery store earlier, I saw one of those flashing signs that the DMV puts up, usually to talk about detours or upcoming construction.
This one cautions drivers to lock their vehicles because, "50% of vehicle burglaries occur to unlocked vehicles".
Let's examine that statement. If 50% of vehicle burglaries occur to unlocked vehicles, then that means that the other 50% occur to locked ones. So, you have EXACTLY the same chance of having your vehicle broken into whether you lock it or not.
Locking your vehicle is therefore statistically insignificant when determining if your car is going to be broken into.
Good job, DMV. You have given us exactly ZERO useful information.
As usual.

I wasn't going to make a political post. I figured, there were enough on my flist that people would likely be sick of them by the time I got around to it.
But, you see, someone on my friends list, someone who I thought I had a clear idea of, made what I consider to be a very inflammatory rant on her journal about how McCain was crazy if he thought she would flip and support Obama after all the "hate he spewed", and how all she can do now is look forward to 2012 and a Palin presidency.
I... was stunned. I said as much. I was probably shorter and snarkier than I wanted to be, from running on too little sleep and being frustrated with work-shaped things besides. When I apologized for being so shocked and that it was only because I thought I knew her better, she responded with "I guess I can ditto that" -- which I take to mean she thought she knew me better than to think I would disagree with her take on things so completely.
So it occurs to me that I've never really made a post in my journal about such things.
( This may run long, so here's a cut. )

Might as well post this here as well. :)
Been working on this cross-stitch project for something like 8 months. Finished it a couple weeks ago, and finally got it in a frame yesterday. It's 11x14, and easily the biggest pattern I've ever worked on, let alone completed.

And here's a little more close-up shot showing some of the detail:
